Major international project


Around 725 kilometres of cable will run from Wilhelmshaven to the Isle of Grain in Kent. The interconnector will be capable of transmitting up to 1.4 gigawatts of electricity in either direction. At the heart of the project are two new converter stations – one in Great Britain and one in Wilhelmshaven-Fedderwarden. They will convert between direct current and alternating current, enabling electricity to be transported and fed into the respective national grids.

ROBIN is right at the heart of it

ROBIN is also involved in delivering the German converter station, contributing its experience from demanding energy-sector projects.

NeuConnect illustrates the scale that modern energy infrastructure has now reached: two of Europe’s largest energy markets will be directly connected for the first time. At the same time, the project will create additional opportunities to share renewable energy across borders and better balance fluctuations in the electricity grids.

Testing and trial operation are scheduled to begin by the end of 2027, with full commercial operation planned for 2028.
